It was going to be a bad day as I was booked into work on the only windy day of the week :( but work went well and I was home at midday :) The wind had not arrived so I enjoyed the sunshine in our garden while keeping an eye on the live Landguard wind feed and at about 2:30 it was up to 12/13 kts so I headed to The Dip. I bumped into Micheal Archer fresh from his around the world adventures including being a judge in wave competitions !!! :) and he was pumping up his sup for the first time - a nice piece of kit. The wind was too light for a short board but beiing southerly it's a good direction for a bit of coastal cruising, so I rigged big and headed down the coast with no particular destination in mind ? The beat was going so well, railing up nicely I decided to continue to the River Orwell and cross the shipping channel and head for Dovercourt. I passed Dovercourt and finally turned by the row of barges on the beach near the River up to Titchmarch Marina - this would be a great spot to shortboard especially with an onshore wind and next time we get a good se it might be with the trip around to Dovercourt - it really is a beautiful spot, a bit shallow at low water and I did sail onto a sand bar along way off shore !!! I then had a 9 mile reach back to just past The Dip - not fully powered but great all the same with the plate down you could ride the waves onto the plane :) I crossed the shipping channel safely with no big ships in sight, past the spot where sadly a yacht was hit and sunk by a dredger working in Felixstowe docks last Sunday - the husband survived but very sadly his wife drown :( Two windsurfers were out at The Manor and David Coles was out flying with 11m on his formula board :) I got back after a near 20 mile round trip and finished off my work packed lunch before heading out again as the breeze filled in :) It was still from the south and I enjoyed the beat and was looking forward to a good reach back, I went ashore and got ready to return when the wind swung sw and increased !!! which made for an interesting trip back !!! You had to sail broad to stand any chance of getting back, there were times when the whole of my 3.8m raceboard was out of the water !!! I even managed to break two batterns and went ashore at The Fludgers thinking I might have to pack up and walk back to the van !!!especially as the sea is really big here and even David was struggling to reach back !!! but the wind dropped a little and after a couple of reaches I made it back to The Dip safely :) Two sailors were out on shortboards when I got back, Chris Stevens and Nick Cadge who were then jioned by Swainy and Mark Smalling who all had an okay sail considering it was getting breezy now and being sw was a bit off now :( So a 5 star session for me great to be out in the sunshine - longboards rule !!!
